Portico

Thimbleby’s Tower, Newgate  & Castle Drive:  Public Art Commission

The Portico project was a cooperative project of the cities of Chester (United Kingdom), Ghent (Belgium), Köln (Germany), Utrecht (the Netherlands), and Initiatief Domplein in Utrecht. The project’s goal was to make the partner cities’ archaeological heritage visible by developing new methods, techniques, and ways of thinking about urban development. Portico was sponsored by the European Regional Development Fund through the Interreg IVB NWE programme. The city of Utrecht was the lead partner.

Donald Insall Associates (DIA) provided the architectural services whilst Imagemakers were the interpretation designers.

MacKinnon-Day was commissioned to fabricate and install artworks within Thimbleby’s Tower, Newgate, and Castle Drive as per the designs approved by the Design Team and other requirements as set out in this briefing document.
